Shyam Bhutkar

Shyam Bhutkar (born 7 November 1954, Pune, Maharashtra) is an Indian painter, muralist, production designer, and art director whose career spans painting, theatre, cinema, and public art. A graduate in Fine Arts (G.D. Art) from Maharashtra in 1979, he has devoted decades to exploring India's artistic traditions through both canvas and stage.

His journey as a painter has been marked by numerous successful solo exhibitions, including repeated shows at Bal Gandharva Art Gallery, Pune (1983, 1984, 1986, 1995, 1997, 2001), Jehangir Art Gallery, Mumbai (1983, 1995), Bajaj Art Gallery, Mumbai, Chetana Art Gallery, and Samlakalin Kalamohotsav, Nashik. He has also participated extensively in group exhibitions across India through organisations such as the Bombay Art Society, Lalit Kala Akademi, Hyderabad Art Society, and Andhra Pradesh Council of Artists.

Beyond the gallery, Bhutkar has created murals for prominent institutions in Pune, including Hotel Cornet, Gandharwa Residency, EPS Electronics, and the Army Sports Institute. His paintings are part of distinguished collections at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), Mumbai, Lalit Kala Akademi, New Delhi, IUCAA, Pune, Kirloskar Cummins, Tata Sons, Prayag Hospital, and numerous private collections across India and abroad.

A significant part of his artistic career has been dedicated to theatre and cinema. For over two decades, he designed stage sets for numerous theatre productions and received the Best Set Design Award at the State Drama Competitions in 1980, 1987, and 1988. His work in Indian cinema earned national recognition when he received the President's Award for Best Art Direction in 1985 for the Hindi film Raosaheb. As an art director, he has contributed to acclaimed Hindi and Marathi films, including Raosaheb, Pestanjee, Suryodaya, Hamidabai Ki Kothi, Vah Mi Savitribai, Pahela Bagi Mahatma, Gabhara, Saptnekarache Mool, Zanzawat, Ek Chirantan Jyoti, Marmabandh, Sakha Maza Dnyaneshwar, Durga Bhagwat, Swatantraveer Savarkar, Peshwai, Chakachak, and Ghar Doghanch.

Throughout his career, Shyam Bhutkar has successfully bridged the worlds of fine art, theatre, and cinema, leaving a lasting contribution to Maharashtra's cultural landscape through his paintings, murals, stage design, and award-winning production design.
